Bucks Luthiers originally met under the banner of Missenden Abbey summer school but in recent years meeting more frequently and regularly at Bucks New University in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The group was originally guided and tutored by Zachary Taylor, a highly skilled maker, designer and concert performer. Zachary is still very much involved with the group, designing many of the instruments being built and frequently attending sessions offering invaluable advice and guidance. Bucks Luthiers’ meetings are organised by Barry Barrett-Mold, an accomplished maker and tutor in adult education.
Our Group Members
Members of Bucks Luthiers have made and are currently making a wide variety of string instruments, generally of the guitar family but not exclusively so. Examples of these can be seen in our Gallery. Other projects include violins, symphonies, hurdy-gurdies and a range of other historical interesting instruments. In fact members of the group are attracted by the challenge of a new or unusual instrument, the technology and science behind it and its context in the spectrum of musical styles and instruments.
Making Stringed Musical Instruments
Making musical instruments is a fascinating and rewarding pass time. It provides the pleasure of working with exotic timbers and producing an instrument that not only looks beautiful but also produces pleasant sounds. Not all makers are players; a few of the group are also blessed with that skill and thus have the additional reward of being able to play an instrument that they have made. An exceptional few also compose their own music for the added bonus.
Only Basic Knowledge Required
You don’t necessarily need to be a skilled woodworker to make an instrument, in fact, some of the best sounds come from simple examples. All you need is some basic knowledge and perception of the use of hand tools, for example, hand saws and planes. As makers progress and further develop their skills they tend to also acquire a wider range of tools. Group members readily share their knowledge, expertise and tools so that all can make progress and produce high-quality instruments.
